Combining households after retirement, sisters Deb and Laurel (lovingly referred by me as "the girls") wanted to shift from their dated, typical galley kitchen and breathe new life into their home. After listening to their lifestyle and new kitchen wish list, I designed a kitchen in 2D and then visited the home with a quote and some green tape. By marking out the new location of walls and appliances, I was able to visibly show the girls how the kitchen would change. A 3D rendering was then created to ensure the space met their expectations. After approval for the kitchen remodel was received (but before construction started), the homeowners added to the project scope. The girls wanted to add a focal point to their living room; specifically a new fireplace and TV mounting with stacked stone. By understanding the finishes and overall aesthetic of the new space, I was able to make recommendations for a truly, show-stopping feature wall. Instead of installing stacked stone, the girls agreed to a fireplace made of granite with an inset TV and flanking floor-to-ceiling shelving units.
The scope of the kitchen including removing a bearing wall (slicing the drywall from one side of the room to the other and installing a beam in the attic, scraping the ceiling and installing a new California texture ceiling), replacing all of the cabinetry, adding new granite counter tops with waterfall edges, new plumbing and electrical. The overall aisle was widened by 7” and the small eat-in space was remodelled to become a butlers pantry. Special features specific to the needs of the homeowners were not overlooked. This included adding a wine fridge in the pantry, adding an electrical outlet in the island, creating a floor-to-ceiling chef's pull-out spice rack beside the fridge and adding additional lighting for a bright, beautiful kitchen. Even WIFI switches were installed so that lighting could be controlled with a smart watch.
I am proud of this design from all aspects and feel the function and beauty of this space is one they can be proud of.
